About Hecansa

In the Canary Islands, Dual Training system has been introduced in 2013/2014 academic year, experimentally. Hecansa appears in 14 projects.

Underemployment in young people under 30 years old is one of the highest, that’s why strategies to improve employability are imperative. One of these strategies is driving the Dual Training System in Education.

This professional training system, based on work, helps to:

  • Promote competences on information and communication technologies and language learning.
  • Promote common international  educational programmes.

This pilot experience started by Hoteles Escuela may contribute in the Canary Islands to:

  • Develop a methodology allowing for work-based training.
  • Increase number of students in Professional Training Educational System, both in Intermediate and High level.
  • Strengthen bonds between tourism business and training system, adapting learning results to labour market needs.
  • Make the training system flexible to adapt it to the current business in the Canary Islands and promoting educational proposals helping work insertion of graduated young people.
  • Increasing job insertion of under 30 young people.
  • Increasing language and technology competences.
  • Revitalizing international programmes for European Alliance for Apprenticeships.
  • Promoting knowledge of vocational education and training information dissemination in businesses.

In Hoteles Escuela de Canarias, we work for the best service, which is guarantee of a satisfactory stay. The main premise in our hotels is offering a painstaking service.

Our methodology is innovative and helps developing in a learning process in real-life work situations. In this way, we achieve new talents with professional and personal competences to obtain work success.

HECANSA is an initiative of the Government of the Canary Islands to strengthen the competitiveness of the tourism sector in the Canary Islands through training and promotion of the professionalization of its human resources and its companies. To do this, HECANSA provides training and a first incorporation into the labour market to new workers in the tourism sector. HECANSA also makes training and continuing professional development with current hospitality workers, from the assistants to the managers.

HECANSA analyses business needs and its concern about adaptation of educational programmes to real-life work. Students trained by HECANSA accomplish requirements for a career path. HECANSA also complements their training in other educational centres with specific programmes.

HECANSA collaborates with the Canary Islands Government and other organizations working with National System for Qualifications and Vocational Education and Training in Tourism in the Canaries. That’s why HECANSA organizes several training strategies giving prestige to the tourist professions.

The advantage of Hecansa, compared to other forms of education in the Canary Islands, is based on an innovative methodology based on the dual training, where it supports classroom training with on-the-job training, and with a clear orientation to the labor market and the employability of their graduates. With immediate responses to the training requirements demanded by the productive sector, currently in need of middle management. This endorses estimates of labor insertion very high, exceeding the 90%.

On the basis of the data and the work carried out during the past few years, fulfilling the objectives set out in the viability plan, there are a number of reasons that make this business imperative and a reference to the Canary society. The lines of action detailed below are not possible to perform them in other educational institutions and that it is useful to explain, the majority is implemented or will do so along the course 2015/2016:

-Specific and innovative methodology based on the dual vocational training, since the year 2013 unique hotels in Spain in the school that supports and toggles the training acquired in the training center and the work that is carried out in the company.

-Training more flexible to adapt to the requirements of the labor market, without ceasing to be official. To do this, currently, the training complements the official content on the basis of surveys that are conducted in collaboration with the companies from emerging tasks are detected. For example, at the present time are taught subjects such as Revenue Management or Community Management.

At present, HECANSA teaches more language hours than official curriculum and makes progress in bilingual training.

-Permanent labor market surveys, in collaboration with the companies to detect those jobs or tasks emerging that may become sources of employment and that later will be included in the training of our students.

-Non-Labor Practices, for newly graduated during 6 months in tourism companies.

- Conversion into Integrated Center, which will allow us to further tailor the training model Hecansa, giving us greater ability to adapt our training both in vocational training in the field of education such as vocational training for employment, through certificates of proficiency. Once published the order the last 12 May, we are in the process of developing our project to request the conversion in the Integrated Center, we anticipate that during the month of July 2015 a reality.

-HECANSA supports international mobility. For example, in 2014/2015 academic years vacancies in Erasmus programme increased by 25, and by 20 more in 2015/2016. Also, our schools are receiving foreign students.

-Implementation of hecansaemplea.com job agency, that is to participate and collaborate in the search for employment both of our former students as well as for those workers who require this service. In addition, HECANSA performs regularly several surveys to detect the training needs of the sector.

-HECANSA works on the recognition of professional qualifications of workers in the sector, having carried out the year 2014 a pilot project with 24 people (of the improvement plan), aiming to recognize their total experience and training. This project is carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Professional Qualifications and the Universidad of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

-Commitment to innovation and improvement of the gastronomy of the Canary Islands, with actions that have as their objective the gastronomic value of the resource and its transformation into a product/service/tourist experience, it is envisaged to implement these actions in May of 2015. An example of this is the research that is being done, currently, for the incorporation of the banana to the gastronomy, or the value of the products of the soil, etc.

-Innovation and new technologies for the training. During the last years new technologies and software (Rate Tiger) has been introduced in the formative process, in such a way that students can be inserted into new sources of employment as: Revenue Management, Community Management, etc. also offered Moodle platform, which will allow us to bring the student curricular content in a blended learning.
